Best AEO courses (and how to choose one)

Six checks to run on any AEO course, then five real options described from their own pages, including free ones and ours.

Quick answer

The right AEO course is one whose claims are sourced, whose material is current, that makes you practice, and whose price and refund terms suit you. Free options include Ahrefs' AEO course, Semrush's AI Visibility Essentials and Google's own AI features guide. Edureka's GEO course on Coursera is included with Coursera Plus, or you buy its Certificate experience for the full materials and certificate, and Learn AEO, which is our course, has a free first lesson and paid plans.

How to choose an AEO course

Pick an AEO course by checking six things you can verify yourself before you pay: sources, dates, practice, authorship, price and refunds. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is young, and AI search features change often, so a course that was accurate a year ago may not be now. These checks take a few minutes per course.

  1. •Is every claim sourced? Look for links to the documentation that Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and others publish about their crawlers and AI features. A claim like "AI engines prefer X" with no source is a guess you would have to test yourself.
  2. •Is it current? Look for a publish or update date on the course page and on its sources. If none is shown, ask the provider.
  3. •Do you practice? Watching videos builds familiarity. Exercises, quizzes and tasks on your own pages build skill. Check the lesson list for anything you do, not just watch.
  4. •Who wrote it? Note who teaches the course and who they work for. Many AEO courses come from companies that sell AEO tools, and their lessons may walk through those tools. That can be useful if you use the tool, and less useful if you don't.
  5. •What does it cost? Check whether "free" covers everything, or whether the certificate, the full course or a subscription is extra.
  6. •Is there a refund policy? For a paid course, find the refund terms before you buy, not after.

Try it as you read: take the free first lesson and see how answer engines choose their sources.

Five AEO learning resources, described from their own pages

Below are five options, in no particular order. Each description uses only what the provider's own page said when we checked it on October 28, 2026. We don't rank them or rate their quality. Prices and contents can change, so check each page again before you decide.

Disclosure: Learn AEO is our course. It is included below with the same kind of facts as the others.

Ahrefs: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) Course

Ahrefs Academy's course page lists 12 video lessons "In 5 modules", with a total length of 1h 26m. The teacher is Sam Oh, listed as "VP of Marketing at Ahrefs". The page says: "No sign-up required, and absolutely free of charge." The page also links to a 50-question exam under "Get Ahrefs certified".

After an introductory lesson, the four named modules are How AI Search Works, AEO Strategy, AEO Execution and Measuring AEO. Lesson topics include how AI search engines work, prompt research, brand mentions, YouTube, robots.txt, GPTBot and llms.txt, and tracking AI traffic in GA4 and Ahrefs Web Analytics. The page shows no course publish or update date.

Semrush Academy: AI Visibility Essentials with Semrush

Semrush Academy's page lists 20 lessons, each with one video, running 1 to 8 minutes each. The instructor is Rita Cidre, described as "the Head of Academy at Semrush". The page says "Enroll for free" and offers a certificate after a final assessment.

The lessons mix strategy, expert and walkthrough videos. Topics include traditional SEO versus AI SEO, share of voice and brand perception, prompt research, third-party brand mentions, making content easy for AI to understand and technical SEO for AI systems. Several walkthroughs use Semrush's own tools, such as its AI Visibility Toolkit and Site Audit. The page shows no course date.

Edureka on Coursera: Generative Engine Content Optimization

This course is offered by Edureka on Coursera and is part of a Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) Specialization. The page lists it as self-paced, beginner level, and "8 hours to complete", in five modules with 17 assignments.

The modules are Content Creation Workflow with AI, On-Page Optimization for GEO (No-Code), Off-Page Authority & Distribution, a project to build an AI-optimized content asset, and a wrap-up assessment. On price, the page shows an "Enroll for free" button and says the course is "Included with Coursera Plus". Its FAQ says that to access course materials and assignments and to earn a certificate, "you'll need to purchase the Certificate experience when you enroll in a course." No price for that was shown on the page.

Google Search Central: AI features and your website

This is free documentation, not a course, but it is Google's own account of how its AI features in Search relate to your site. The page was last updated on December 10, 2025. It covers how AI features work in Search, technical requirements for appearing in them, SEO best practices, measuring performance and controlling your content in AI features.

One line worth knowing before you buy anything that sells special files or markup: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features."

There are no exercises or certificate. It suits you if you want the primary source behind what courses teach about AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Learn AEO

Learn AEO is an online course for marketers who already know SEO basics. It has eight lessons. Three are live today: how answer engines choose sources, making your site reachable by AI, and writing citable content. The other five are marked coming soon: structured data and entities, authority beyond your site, platform playbooks, measuring AI visibility, and running an AEO program.

Each lesson is interactive, with short checks, a hands-on exercise and an audit, and each concept lists the sources it relies on with the date they were checked. Lessons are listed at 20 to 30 minutes each.

The first lesson is free. The paid plans are $100 as one payment or $10 per month, which you can cancel at any time. Both include all eight lessons as they open and a certificate. Our terms offer a 14-day money-back guarantee: if you are unhappy within 14 days of purchase, you can ask for a full refund.

How to use this list

Start with what is free. Read Google's AI features guide, then try a free course or the free first lesson of a paid one, and see which style keeps you working rather than just watching.

Then run the six checks above on anything you plan to pay for. If you already use Ahrefs or Semrush, their courses show you their tools in context. If you want a certificate from a large catalog, Coursera offers one at a cost. If you want a course built around sourced claims and practice, look at how Learn AEO's free lesson handles both and judge for yourself.

Whichever you choose, keep the primary sources close. Courses summarize. The documentation from Google, OpenAI and Anthropic is what the courses should be summarizing. For the difference between AEO and related terms, see AEO vs SEO vs GEO.
